May is Asthma Awareness Month World Asthma Day- May 6th � In the U.S. alone, as estimated 20 million Americans, including more than 6 million children, suffer from asthma. Asthma is the most common serious chronic disease of childhood and the #1 cause for school absenteeism among children.
May is Asthma Awareness Month. According to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), every day in America: � 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma � 30,000 people have an asthma episode � 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma � 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma � 11 people die from asthma
World Asthma Day 2008, which is organized & sponsored by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) will be held on May 6, 2008. The theme for World Asthma Day 2008 is �You Can Control Your Asthma�.
Asthma control is the goal of treatment. Signs that asthma is not well controlled include any of the following:
� Use of a �relief� inhaler 2 or more times in one week � 2 or more night time awakenings in 1 month due to asthma symptoms � Asthma symptoms interfere with normal activity � Peak flow less than 80% of predicted/personal best � Use of oral steroids 2 or more times per year for asthma symptoms � Emergency room, urgent care center or urgent physician�s office visits for asthma.
